GEAR RENTAL DETAILS
Fresh snowfall in Rocky Mountain National Park creates deep drifts, soft powder, and uneven surfaces that make regular hiking nearly impossible. Snowshoes allow you to float on top of the snow instead of sinking into it, giving you a stable, efficient way to explore winter trails across Bear Lake, Bierstadt Lake, Glacier Gorge, and the meadows of Moraine Park. For guests traveling when the snow is deep and unconsolidated, snowshoes are one of the safest and most essential tools for winter travel in RMNP.
Our MSR snowshoes are designed for Colorado’s variable conditions—light powder, packed snow, rolling terrain, and steeper forested trails. Their wide platforms create flotation, while the integrated crampon-style teeth underneath provide traction on firmer sections. This balance of flotation and grip allows families, first-time winter hikers, and seasoned adventurers to explore RMNP comfortably without the exhausting post-holing that comes from hiking in deep snow without proper gear.
When using snowshoes, guests should walk with a slightly wider stance, move at a steady pace, and stay on designated winter routes to avoid unstable snow, tree wells, and hidden obstacles. Snowshoes perform best in deeper snow; if you encounter exposed rock or thin patches, avoid walking directly on those surfaces to prevent damage to the bindings and traction system. Always wear waterproof, insulated boots, layered winter clothing, gloves, and a warm hat, as temperatures and wind chill can shift quickly at higher elevations.
After placing your order, your snowshoe size will be assigned based on your total weight(winter gear + backpack + body), ensuring proper flotation and performance on the trail.
