GEAR RENTAL DETAILS
Winter in Rocky Mountain National Park transforms even the easiest trails into snow-packed, icy terrain. Microspikes are one of the safest and most effective tools for navigating these conditions—giving you secure footing on packed snow, ice sheets, frozen inclines, and slippery switchbacks. Whether you're exploring Bear Lake, Nymph Lake, or the Moraine Park meadows, microspikes dramatically reduce the risk of slips and falls while keeping your winter adventure smooth and enjoyable.
Microspikes fit directly over your hiking boots and use stainless-steel chains and small, aggressive teeth to bite into the ice. They’re ideal for winter travel because they don’t require any technical skill, and they offer instant confidence for families, casual hikers, and anyone new to Colorado’s winter trails. Unlike snowshoes, microspikes are meant for traction—not flotation—making them perfect for packed trails where the snow has already been compressed by foot traffic.
When using microspikes in RMNP, guests should follow simple safety guidelines: walk with shorter steps, stay on established winter routes, avoid steep icy slopes, and remove microspikes before stepping onto bare rock, pavement, or wooden structures to avoid damaging the spikes or twisting an ankle. Always pair microspikes with insulated winter boots, waterproof layers, gloves, and a hat, as wind chill and changing conditions can shift rapidly at higher elevations.
After you place your order, the size of your microspikes will be assigned based on shoe size.
