Before You Go: Traffic, Weather, and Road Conditions in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park covers 415 square miles, from the valleys around Estes Park to 14,259 feet on Longs Peak. Conditions at the entrances can look nothing like conditions above treeline, so check the cameras on this page before you leave town.

Entrance Traffic in Rocky Mountain National Park

The Beaver Meadows, Fall River, and Grand Lake entrance cameras show the flow of vehicles entering the park. If one entrance looks backed up, the other entrance on the same side of the park is often the faster choice. Parking along Bear Lake Road fills early on busy days, so an early start helps. Timed entry reservations are required during part of the year, so check the park's current alerts before you go.

Weather in Rocky Mountain National Park

Mountain weather changes fast. Be prepared for sun, strong winds, blowing snow, and icy roads at any time of year, and expect temperatures to drop as you climb. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, and lightning above treeline is a real risk. The Park Service urges hikers above treeline to summit early and head down by noon. The cameras above show current sky and snow conditions at several elevations, from the valley floors to 11,796 feet at the Alpine Visitor Center. For more on park weather, see the Park Service weather page.

Road Conditions and Trail Ridge Road Status

Trail Ridge Road usually closes for the winter in October and reopens in late May, and temporary closures can go into effect at any time when weather moves in. Bear Lake Road stays open year round, with snow, ice, and traction controls possible in winter and spring. Old Fall River Road is a seasonal one way unpaved road that closes to vehicles in the fall. The Park Service does not post road status updates on its website, so for the latest Trail Ridge Road status call the status line at 970-586-1222, or see the Park Service road status page. For highway conditions on US 34 and US 36 into Estes Park, check CDOT's COtrip.
